Before a competitive medical school entrance exam in France, researchers asked 719 candidates what they had been dreaming about. Just over 60 percent had dreamt about the exam the night before it. In 78 percent of those dreams something went wrong: they turned up late, or the answers would not come. Then the marks arrived, and the students who had dreamt about the exam had done better than the ones who had not.

That study, by Isabelle Arnulf and colleagues in 2014, is a good place to start with any dream that keeps coming back, because the repetition here is doing something ordinary. The exam was on these students’ minds. Their sleeping brains kept picking it up. No hidden code, nothing going wrong.

How Common Are They, Really

Less common than you have probably been told. Between 60 and 75 percent of adults say they have had at least one recurring dream in their lifetime, a range Antonio Zadra has been reporting since the mid-1990s. Most people, then. Not almost everyone.

They also lean unpleasant. Michael Schredl gathered recurring dream reports from 676 people and found about two thirds negative in tone, with failure or helplessness the most frequent subject and being chased close behind. Pleasant recurring dreams exist. They are the minority.

The Repetition Follows Your Waking Life

The best-supported idea in dream research is also the least mysterious. It is called the continuity hypothesis, and it says what you dream about follows what you spend your days on. Schredl tested it in 100 adolescents across six everyday activities: television, video games, social media, hobbies, pets, and time with a partner. For all six, the more waking hours a teenager gave to something, the more often it turned up in their dreams. Schredl is also the researcher most likely to call the hypothesis loosely worded, and he has a point. Plenty of what you do all day never shows up at night, and nobody can say why.

For recurring dreams in particular, the sharpest test came from Duke and Davidson in 2002. They followed 39 students through the week before mid-term exams and through a calm one, sorted into three groups: a recurring dream currently running, a recurring dream that had ended some time ago, and never one at all. Everybody remembered more dreams during exam week. Only the active group had more nights of the recurring dream itself. Stress did not hand the other two groups a recurring dream. It fed the one already there.

What the Dream Is a Picture Of

You will read that a recurring dream is a worn groove in the brain, a pathway so well practised that it fires whenever the matching mood turns up. It sounds convincing. Ernest Hartmann, who spent decades scoring the images in dream reports, argued close to the opposite: dreaming makes its connections loosely and widely, and it avoids exactly the tight, overlearned material a worn-groove story depends on.

His own account is plainer and odder. Dreaming links things together, the links are steered by what the dreamer feels, and the strongest image in a dream is a picture of the feeling itself.

If that is right, it explains what people find strangest about their own recurring dreams: the setting keeps changing while the feeling never does. One year a corridor, the next an airport, then a house you have never lived in. The scenery gets repainted because the scenery was never the point.

Being Chased Is the Most Common Dream Theme. That Is All It Is.

In 2003 Tore Nielsen and his co-authors handed a 55-item list of dream themes to 1,181 Canadian university students and asked which they had ever experienced. Being chased or pursued, without being physically hurt, came first at 81.5 percent, and it was also the earliest dream people most often remembered. Sexual dreams came second, falling third, school and studying fourth.

That is the finding, and it is the whole finding. The popular follow-on claim, that being chased means you are avoiding something in waking life, is folklore from dream dictionaries. We went looking for the content-analysis research it gets credited to and could not find it.

The serious version of the question has been tested. Zadra, with Sophie Desjardins and Éric Marcotte, scored 212 recurring dreams for threatening content in 2006. Two thirds contained at least one threat, usually dangerous, usually aimed at the dreamer, and the dreamer usually did something reasonable to get away. That fits the idea that dreaming rehearses danger for practice. But under 15 percent of the dreams showed a situation that would realistically bear on survival, which is awkward for the theory, and Katja Valli and Antti Revonsuo, who proposed it, published a reply the same year disputing the reading. Anyone selling a settled meaning for the chase dream is ahead of the evidence.

The Teeth

If we had to keep one result from this whole literature, it would be this one.

Dreams about teeth falling out are famous, and they are not common. On Nielsen’s list they rank 38th of 55, reported by 18.8 percent of students. And the standard explanations for them, anxiety about ageing or a loss of personal power, have been tested against the boring alternative: your mouth is uncomfortable while you sleep.

Naama Rozen and Nirit Soffer-Dudek asked 210 students about both sides of that in 2018. Teeth dreams went with tension in the teeth, gums, or jaw on waking, a small but clear link (correlation 0.21). They did not go with psychological distress at all, at 0.02, which is nothing. That was not the study failing to detect distress: in the same sample, dreams of being smothered lined up with distress strongly, falling dreams weakly. The most symbolic-sounding dream on the list is the one with a physical cause.

What Happens When One Stops

Brown and Donderi split people the same three ways in 1986: dream currently running, dream ended, never one. Current dreamers reported the lowest well-being. The people whose dream had stopped reported the highest, higher even than those who never had one, and a later study with younger participants found the same shape. It is a correlation, so it cannot tell you whether the dream stopped because life improved or the other way round. What it suggests is that a recurring dream is attached to a live situation, and goes quiet when the situation does.

When to Talk to Someone

Most recurring dreams need no treatment, including the horrible ones. Frequent nightmares, meaning roughly one a week or more, affect roughly 1 to 7 percent of adults depending on the study. The distressing end of this is real but uncommon.

Bring it to a therapist or sleep clinician if a dream replays an actual traumatic event rather than echoing a feeling, if you have started dreading bed, or if it follows you into your days. The reason to raise it is that this responds to treatment better than people expect. In a randomised trial published in JAMA in 2001, Barry Krakow’s team worked with 168 women with chronic nightmares after trauma; half were taught, over three sessions, to rehearse a rewritten version of the dream while awake. Nights with nightmares in that group fell from 3.88 a week to 1.33, and the gain held at six months. Three sessions is a small ask for something running for years.

What to Look at in Your Own

None of this hands you a meaning, and we think a single fixed meaning is the wrong thing to hunt for. What the evidence keeps pointing at is timing and feeling. Two questions get you most of the way:

  • When did the dream last turn up, and what was going on in the two weeks around it?
  • Take the plot out entirely. What is the one feeling left over, and where else in your life do you recognise it?

Neither can be answered from memory, which is the honest argument for writing them down. A recurring dream is obvious only in hindsight, once six entries sit next to each other and you notice they all landed in the same difficult spring.
